Chapter 3

If you choose to do so, please post about the chapter here.

These optional posts are a way to participate if you feel less inclined to do so in class. Each post should be no less than 200 words and should reflect some sort of critical thought about the chapter, expanding on the ideas presented in the text, as opposed to simply summarizing various points.

While reading about genre in chapter 3, it mentioned memes as a prime example of how genre is used to respond to rhetorical situations. Memes today are used in a variety of ways, whether to make people laugh or to make a point they have changed over time. They used to have a punch line and meaning, sometimes they still do. Such as when Barack Obama's brother discovered what anime was, and then posted about it on his twitter feed. This highlighted old people discovering young things and finding out the good and the bad. While it was still humorous, it was information. There are also a variety of memes highlighting political figures tweets or actions, and making fun of them usually to make a point about the meme generator's own thoughts on it. Now, most memes found on the internet usually don't contain any meaning and exist solely to make people laugh. There are a variety of memes that people find on twitter or Instagram and other social media platforms that embody meaningless traits. These traits include simply being loud to attempt to be funny, turning up the temperature setting on the picture, or other editing tools to make a picture or video look completely ridiculous to get the desired reaction from the viewer.

When major events happen in the world, people respond differently to them and some people write about them. For example, after 9/11 many people heard about the news through television, however, newspapers still produced articles on the topic. This gives people many ways to respond to the information and react how they please. A newspaper article may be more fact based than a news channel relaying news, which may be what people want to hear. On a more comical note, memes are ways that people put a satirical twist on a serious situation. Many people use memes to release tension and act as a barrier between offending people but still discussing touchy subjects. Personally, memes help me laugh about situations that would normally be too serious to laugh about, however, it helps me thoroughly think about the serious situation. A press release is when a company or group of people discuss a situation that has to do with that group with the public. It is usually formal, however, it personally helps me understand all of the facts that are involved in the situation. I think that it is a great way for a company to relay information to its stakeholders.
