Chapter 2

If you choose to do so, please post about the chapter here.

These optional posts are a way to participate if you feel less inclined to do so in class. Each post should be no less than 200 words and should reflect some sort of critical thought about the chapter, expanding on the ideas presented in the text, as opposed to simply summarizing various points.

Genres can be used to characterize anything due to the fact that it is used for communication between the speaker and the audience. The textbook uses different examples of communication with the reader. Also, in English the class was instructed to write a project based on different television or movie genres and the tropes found within them. These represent two different kinds of ways in which genres can communicate with the audience. One is the means in which a person can use and the other is the act itself. This is evident because a person can write a script for a play or movie and that is characterized as a form of genre. This is then followed by the review of the finished product that will distinguish what kind of movie it may be; a horror movie for example, with the tropes of a haunted house that are used to define its genre. The genres are important to society because they are a sorting mechanism that can help products pander to their intended audiences. Without this kind of sorting mechanism people wouldn’t know what to expect from movies or what kind of system a person communicates their ideas doing (blog, news article, memoirs). The genre has proven to be an integral part of holding together a part of society as without it people would be clueless.

The genre of a persons writing is the category or type of text that the author is writing. Specific genres often attract different types of people and many people like to read a few specific genres. Often, a genre is the way that someone communicates with other people. For example, in class we were asked to write a paper on any television show or movie that has a specific genre and the tropes involved with that specific genre. I used "The Usual Suspects," which is a murder mystery, a type of popular genre. The paper itself is another type of genre. It had a formal style and analyzed the movie I was talking about. A blog is another type of genre and is usually in a less formal tone, which makes it easier for the reader to relate to the writer. A blog usually allows other people to comment, so it is in a very conversational tone. The style of an author is the way that the author displays their ideas and their word choice. A memoir is another type of writing that includes the reflection on the authors past experiences. It is mostly from the first person point of view and is most likely factual/ based on true stories.
